Holcombe Market and Brook Street form a vital social and economic heart within Bruce Grove. As part of Haringey Council’s Your Bruce Grove programme, NOOMA Studio developed the public realm and market design to strengthen this role, exploring how the market could grow, connect and thrive.

The proposals reimagined fixed market structures, back-of-house functions and surrounding public spaces to create a safer, greener and more welcoming environment.

Extensive co-design with traders and residents shaped layouts, accessibility, greenery and shared spaces, ensuring the emerging vision reflected local culture, supported everyday use and reinforced the relationship between the market, the street and the wider neighbourhood.

Stakeholder engagement has been central to the project, with the design team working closely with the local community through Resident Steering Groups and public consultations. Co-design and consultation meetings with local residents and the neighbouring nursery have informed key themes including massing, play spaces, greening, and access.

‘The Phoenix Road Performing Gardens’ also featured a performing stage on the central point of the road, offering an opportunity for passers-by to practice, play or observe a theatrical moment.
Addressing the busiest corner of Phoenix Road, the speaker’s podium acted as Somers Town’s own speaker’s corner, a platform for residents and visitors walking through with something to say.
