Leathermarket Gardens & Tyers Estate
Community-Led Urban Regeneration
_JPG.jpg)
The regeneration of Leathermarket Gardens and the adjacent Tyers Estate delivers a renewed public landscape for Bermondsey, responding to social change, climate pressures, and the everyday needs of a growing community.
Set within a dense residential context, the project redefines the gardens as an inclusive and legible civic space, strengthening connections between housing, streets, and parkland.
Community-led design, climate-resilient planting, and bespoke wayfinding embed local narratives into the landscape, reinforcing identity while supporting long-term social and ecological value.

The brief was co-written with the local community, reflecting NOOMA Studio’s approach to collective personal storytelling, where many voices shape a shared sense of place.
Extensive consultation informed inclusive entrances, sociable thresholds, interpretative play and ecological richness, resulting in a series of modest yet transformative interventions that support belonging, imagination, intergenerational use and community authorship of the public realm.
