Supporting excellence in housing design across the UK.
NOOMA Studio recently joined the judging panel for the The Architects' Journal Architecture Awards (projects up to £25 million).
The submissions reflected a diverse and ambitious field, spanning urban infill, estate regeneration, retrofit and rural housing delivery. Across many of the shortlisted schemes, a clear commitment to fabric-first sustainability was evident, with Passivhaus principles, low operational energy targets and whole-life carbon thinking becoming increasingly embedded within mainstream housing delivery.
Judging also highlighted a growing emphasis on stewardship, fuel poverty reduction and long-term management strategies. Several projects demonstrated how careful detailing, threshold design and shared space planning can significantly enhance everyday quality of life without relying on excessive budgets.
Participation in the process offered valuable insight into how practices across the UK are responding to shared challenges in viability, density and climate performance with rigour and creativity. It reinforced the importance of raising collective standards in housing design at a time of acute national need.
