NOOMA Studio was shortlisted in the Enfield Intergenerational Housing competition, invited to propose innovative ideas for homes and neighbourhood design that support sustainable, inter‑age communities in the Meridian Water development.
The judges commented: “The winning project stood out for its authentic narration that takes the audience with it every step of the journey.”
The Enfield Intergenerational Housing competition was organised by Enfield Council and Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing to explore new housing concepts that enable residents of all ages to live together, share support and strengthen social connections. The competition invited emerging, local and BAME‑led practices to submit proposals that rethink how housing can foster connection, tackle social isolation and promote resilient communities.
NOOMA Studio was one of five practices shortlisted from a competitive field. The shortlist also included teams led by Studio Weave & JA Projects, Architecture Doing Place & Studio Gil, Studio Verve and Adrian Hill Architects — all invited to develop high‑quality concepts for intergenerational living that combine spatial innovation with community support.
The brief challenged designers to imagine homes and shared spaces where multiple generations live alongside each other, exchanging skills, resources and everyday care. Intergenerational housing concepts are increasingly recognised as a response to demographic change and the housing crisis, offering new ways to build stronger, more inclusive neighbourhoods across London and beyond.
While the competition was led by established councils and housing partners, its focus on emerging and diverse architectural voices created space for experimental ideas that go beyond conventional typologies, emphasising social cohesion and wellbeing as fundamental design outcomes.
